Sweco to improve power supply in Mozambique’s capital city

In Mozambique’s capital city of Maputo, Sweco has been chosen to plan how the municipal electrical grid can be upgraded and expanded.
Lack of access to electricity is still widespread in most cities of central and southern Africa – a problem that makes everyday life more difficult and limits the development potential of local businesses.

“In recent years Sweco has been involved in a number of similar assignments in countries like Botswana, Ethiopia and Tanzania, where the aim is to provide both rural and urban populations with functioning systems for the supply of electricity,” says Anders Ståhl, Assignment Manager at Sweco.

Sweco will prepare proposals for expansion of the electrical grid in Maputo and study how the existing infrastructure can be modernised and rehabilitated. Sweco will also produce tender documents that will help the client move forward with the project, as well as monitoring deliveries and installations.

The contract has been awarded by the energy company Electricidade de Moçambique, and is worth over EUR 1.7 million.
