Tough challenges ahead for new Head of Media at STIM

Tomas Ericsson has been appointed as Executive Director of International Markets and Media at STIM, the Swedish Performing Rights Society. Tomas will be in charge of all music licensing for TV and radio use, including all online licensing.
A high proportion of total revenue collected by STIM today is generated by the media and online sector. With new technology and creative areas of use for music, these markets are expanding faster and faster, and are in a constant state of change.

“We have to keep right up with current developments because new ways of using music are always cropping up. Creators of music must be able to trust that they will be paid when their music is played, whether on the radio, in concerts, via the Internet or on mobile phones. For that, we need good intelligence about the new music markets and we have to be open to new types of licences for our customers”, says Tomas Ericsson.

As result of a decision by the EU Commission, STIM and the other collecting societies in Europe can no longer cooperate under the same arrangements as before. This also means that STIM will also have to adapt its operations to the new conditions.

“The new situation will bring tougher competition, but today STIM is already well equipped to meet the future. Now, we are taking another step in the right direction by bringing in Tomas Ericsson, who has the expertise that will be needed to deal with the media and online sector in the future”, says Kenth Muldin, CEO, STIM.

Tomas Ericsson has more than 15 years of experience from the IT, telecom, insurance and entertainment industries. He has been working within the STIM Group since 2006, latterly as CEO of CEE Services AB and ICE, a joint venture between STIM and the UK’s PRS for Music, which manages data volumes.

“In 15 years, I believe that STIM will be a highly forward-looking and modern collecting society, and one that is well represented in and outside Europe through its repertoire. STIM’s technical systems are vital to our ability to translate copyright into practice”, concludes Tomas Ericsson.
