STIM enters pan-EEA licensing deal with Nokia

STIM, the Swedish Performing Rights Society, has taken a major step when it comes to creating a new licensing landscape for Europe, by entering into a pan-EEA licensing deal with Nokia for its Comes With Music service.
The agreement with Nokia was reached in cooperation with STIM’s Nordic counterparts in Finland (TEOSTO) and Norway (TONO). The much heralded Comes With Music service offers customers unlimited access to download repertoire from the four major record companies as well as important independents. However rather than pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee, the cost of the music service is embedded in the price of the handset, thus offering a “free” music experience to customers.
“As one of the most forward thinking new music services offering a ‘free’ experience, STIM sees the Nokia offering as not only viable but a better than alternative to illegal file sharing” says Scott Farrant, International Licensing Director at STIM.
“This innovative solution gave Nokia the legal certainty it needed to launch its service in Sweden in April, as well as other European markets. It also progresses the multi-territorial licensing of rights via a ‘hub’ solution that the market so desperately needs. STIM expects that we are setting the blueprint for the future of European licensing” concludes Scott Farrant.
