SSAB announces new research and development facility for its North American Divi...

SSAB today announced it will construct a research and development facility adjacent to its steel mill in Montpelier, Muscatine County, Iowa. The new facility will replace the research and development laboratory that was included in the sale of SSAB’s tubular operations earlier this year, and will enhance the Division’s ability to service its customers and operations in both the United States and Canada.

SSAB is reducing costs and personnel

As a consequence of the severe downturn in the steel market and the uncertain prospects for 2009, SSAB is undertaking a cost savings program that is estimated to reduce operating costs by at least SEK 1 billion per year. As part of the program, SSAB intends to reduce its workforce by 1,300. The savings program will be implemented in 2009 and the full impact is expected to be felt in 2010.

SSAB updates market prospects for the 4th quarter

Demand for steel has fallen rapidly in November and thus appears to be weaker than was anticipated in SSAB’s report for the third quarter of 2008.

SSAB and Green Cargo have concluded a 10-year agreement for the transport of steel slabs and rolled products between the SSAB plants in Borlänge, Luleå and Oxelösund.
