First clinical images from Sectra's MicroDose Mammography system show
very promising results
The Swedish IT and medical technology company Sectra announces that its
MicroDose Mammography system is now clinically operational at St: Göran
Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.
"The initial results from our tests of the Sectra MicroDose
MammographyTM system look very promising. The tests indicate that the
images will reach the quality and dose levels we have seen in laboratory
studies", says Karin Leifland, MD, director of the mammography
department at St Göran's.
Sectra MicroDose MammographyTM is a digital mammography system based on
a completely new digital technology which, at the same image quality as
the current film-based systems, gives a five-fold reduction in absorbed
radiation dose to examined women.
Sectra is planning to deliver the first units to Scandinavian
mammography departments in 2002. Deliveries in the USA depend on FDA
approval and is planned to start in 2003.
Clinical trials of Sectra MicroDose MammographyTM in the USA will be
performed in co-operation with Professor Etta Pisano and the University
of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The
goal is to begin these clinical trials in the second half of next year.
Sectra is one of today's major PACS providers with more than 200 PACS
installations worldwide. The Swedish based company operates through
partners in most of the world, but delivers directly to end customers in
Northern Europe. The core business is to deliver top-of-the-line high-
availability, robust enterprise PACS for 24/7 operation. In Sweden,
which is currently the country with the largest penetration of PACS in
