HEART-RENDING GORILLA PHOTOGRAPH WINS TWO NATIONAL AWARDS

A heart-rending photograph capturing an intimate moment between a new born baby gorilla and her mother at Blackpool Zoo has scooped two top awards at the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquarium (BIAZA) awards 2010.

It was taken by regular zoo visitor Sharon Bentley, who has had no photography training, just days after Meisie the Western Lowland gorilla was born in May this year.

EMMA ZOO…..MS TO THE TOP OF THE CLASS

Blackpool Zoo Keeper Emma Banks is flying high after scoring top marks at the end of the first year of her Advanced National Diploma in the Management of Zoo Animals.

Emma, who is 26 and from Kirkham, scooped a whopping ten out of ten distinctions in all her Diploma Units, which included the Role of Zoological Collections, Principles of Animal Behaviour and Animal Nutrition.

BABY FLAMINGO THINKS IT IS A ZOO KEEPER!!!

The youngest member of Blackpool Zoo’s flamingo flock thinks it is a zoo keeper!
Shortly after hatching on July 18th this year, the fluffy flamingo ‘imprinted’ on the first living creature it saw - namely James Mulvany , Blackpool Zoo’s Senior Bird and Reptile Keeper.

ZOO KEEPERS LEND A HAND TO FEATHERED FRIEND

Keepers at Blackpool Zoo are really getting to grips with the latest feathery arrival.

A baby Demoiselle Crane, which hatched in May, is being hand reared after he was removed from his parents’ nest in the interest of his well-being.

Specialist keepers are feeding him on crane pellets, chopped fish, fruit, vegetables and insects, a diet which mirrors that of his traditional diet in his native Asia.

Blackpool Zoo is appealing to the nation for telegraph pole poles or tall trees, which will help to build a climbing frame for gorillas.
