STUDENTS CULTIVATING THE ENVIRONMENT

Young people are urged to explore their interests in understanding and protecting the environment and animals by taking Principal Learning in Environmental and Land-based Studies as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Principal Learning in Environmental and Land-based Studies is now available in Wales as an option within the Welch Baccalaureate Qualification (WBO). Students choosing this Principal Learning will get first-hand experience working with animals used for recreation, work, companionship and production. This programme will also focus on developing the sustainable environment and look at the limited resources of our national environment and how they are used.

Gordon McGlone, Chief Executive of the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, said: “We need really well-rounded, well-qualified, well-informed people to come into our industry. The Principle Learning in Environmental and Land-based Studies is going to be a very good way for young people to acquire those skills – the science, the learning, the team working skills and the technical skills to make them ready for work so that when they do look for a job, they are going to be really strong candidates.”

Liz Pridgeon, Lantra’s Head of Qualifications and Curriculum Development, said: “There are so many opportunities available for students today, but for those with a deep interest in the environment and in animals, this Principle Learning is a great opportunity to get a better understanding of the rural environments, which are so key to Wales’ economy and heritage.”

Employers who are interested in supporting these principal studies can get involved through work shadowing, attending industry days, hosting workplace visits, becoming business advisers, mentoring and offering work experience.
