New Equine Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks Available

for immediate release

Scotland’s learners and employers working with horses can now use new level 2 and revised level 3 Equine Modern Apprenticeship frameworks that have been approved by the Modern Apprenticeship Group and launched by Lantra Sector Skills Council.

Over the past year, Lantra has undertaken an extensive consultation with Scotland’s equine businesses, industry professionals and training providers to review industry’s requirements for Modern Apprenticeships and ensure they are kept relevant and up-to-date to meet the changing needs of industry professionals.

Jo-Anne Bryan, Lantra’s Project Manager for Apprenticeships and Frameworks, said “Lantra is proud to announce that new and updated frameworks are now available for immediate use by training providers in Scotland. The new level 2 (SCQF level 5) Modern Apprenticeship framework coupled with the revised level 3 (SCQF level 6) framework, provides learners and employers alike with progression opportunities needed.”

A Modern Apprenticeship is not a qualification in itself but a package of learning and qualifications combined with work-based learning specific to the needs of the industry. It can be delivered entirely in the workplace or through a combination of workplace and learning at an approved college or training provider.

Mary Mitchell, Lantra Regional Partnership Manager for Scotland, said “After close consultation with industry, it was evident that a level 2 Modern Apprenticeship was in high demand. These new frameworks are a great platform to help individuals across Scotland develop a career working with horses.”

The benefit is that the Modern Apprenticeship framework includes relevant industry skills combined with core skills required by employers, such as communication, working with others, problem solving, ICT and numeracy. Many businesses offer Modern Apprentice places across Scotland because they understand the benefits that apprentices bring.

Taking on a Modern Apprentice can help an employer improve their business performance. Because apprentices get relevant training, they can make a real and meaningful contribution to a business. Their training is ‘on-the-job’, so they add to productivity while gaining directly from the skills and experience of those around them. Employing a Modern Apprentice can also help a business avoid skills shortages, motivate the other employees and can help a business develop new skills.

Rosemary Brown, from Easterton Stables, said “The new equine Modern Apprenticeship frameworks are a very positive step for the equine industry, and will support a new generation of equine employees. What makes these frameworks so impactful is the fact that Lantra worked vigorously with equine professionals to ensure that learners develop the skills that are really needed to work with horses.”
