LANTRA AWARDS IRELAND

12 September 2011

Agreement has been reached by the Lantra Awards Ireland Board that the joint enterprise Lantra Awards Ireland (LAIL) should suspend trading in light of new developments taking place in the Irish Market.

LAIL was originally set up to meet the training requirements of those people working on the maintenance of high speed roads in Ireland. High speed roads are defined as dual carriageways and motorways. There have been three significant developments recently which have led to the decision to suspend LAIL’s activities:

* The Irish National Roads Authority will from 2012 be changing the way that it contracts for high speed road maintenance
* The Department of Transport and the Irish local authorities have recently issued a tender for the development of a high speed road maintenance training programme designed to meet the specific conditions of the Irish roads system.
* To avoid any conflict of interest resulting from contracts being secured by either of the partners in LAIL.

Candidates that have successfully completed the CHM course in Traffic Design Management will be certificated by Lantra Awards under their customised provision route. This ensures that the course have been reliably and validly assessed against the stated outcomes of the programme.

Notes to Editors

1. Lantra Awards Ireland was originally set up to meet the training requirements of those people responsible for the maintenance of high speed roads in Ireland.
2. High speed roads are defined as dual carriageways and motorways. There are some 1,200 km of roads in the Irish high speed road network. Around one third is currently managed under public private partnership agreements. The National Roads Authority intends to transfer maintenance of the rest of this network to similar agreements during 2012.
3. At present the only maintenance qualifications recognised by the NRA in the PPP agreements are the United Kingdom Highways Sector Schemes 12a and c.
4. It is recognised, however, that the are certain differences between the UK and Irish traffic management systems and this has led to the Department of Transport and Irish Local Authorities jointly tendering for a new training programme to meet the specific requirements of the Irish market.
5. Lantra Awards Ireland directors are drawn from Lantra and CHM Group Ltd, Dublin.
