Charles Eames, Jr. was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri, the nephew of architect William S. Eames. He also entertained architectural ambitions as a teenager, triggered by his part-time job at the Laclede Steel Company. He obtained a scholarship to study architecture at Washington University in St. Louis but left after two years. There is controversy as to the reasons for this, with some sources citing the establishment’s dismissal of his interest in modern architecture and others stating that a part-time job with architects Trueblood and Graf caused his performance at university to suffer.
