The art in Malmö’s Citytunneln

The planning of the public artworks for Citytunneln I Malmö began as long ago as 2003, two years before the building work on the tunnel commenced. The artworks at the three stations, Hyllie Station, Triangeln Station and Malmö Central station have been developed in a close collaboration with four participating artists.
Travelling is often a visual, not to mention very cinematic experience. A train carriage can come to resemble a kind of cinema theatre, in which the view through the window becomes the film. Commercial railway travel was developed at the same time as the birth of the moving image and the first steps toward cinema. The relationship between trains, travelling, and cinema has been the focus of Tania Ruiz Gutiérrez monumental video installation Elsewhere made for Malmö Central station. 44 video projections along the walls of the station creates an illusion of being on board an enormous train carriage that moves slowly and boundlessly through the world.
