Prostate Cancer Canada makes $1 million Movember-funded leadership gift to support Edmonton’s Campaign for Prostate Health

Edmonton, Alberta – (April 12, 2011) - Prostate Cancer Canada President, Steve Jones, presented a $1 million dollar cheque to Edmonton’s Campaign for Prostate Health Co-Chair, Irv Kipnes. The presentation was made at the annual Prostate Cancer Canada Wake Up Call Breakfast at The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton.

The $1 million donation will support the development of a specialized Prostate Health Clinic at the new Edmonton Clinic.

“We are so pleased to be able to make this Movember-funded gift in support of the Campaign for Prostate Health in Edmonton. The announcement that the Prostate Health Clinic would be located in the Edmonton Clinic provided us with the perfect opportunity to recognize the outstanding support we have received from this community. It is our chance to give back,” says Jones, “Our organization raises funds across the country but our success depends on individual communities getting on board and really engaging in the cause.”

The gift brings the $30 million dollar Campaign for Prostate Health into the home stretch, bringing the total funds raised to date to over $24 million.

Prostate Cancer Canada is the proud beneficiary partner of Movember, the charity event that engages men to grow a moustache every November while raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer.  Last year, over 118,000 Canadians raised more than $22 million through the power of the moustache.

“We are very grateful to Prostate Cancer Canada for this tremendous gift and their tireless dedication in the fight against prostate cancer. We congratulate them on their creative and successful community fundraising initiatives – like the Wake Up Call Breakfast, Movember and Father’s Day Walk/Run,” says Kipnes. “Edmonton has shown strong support for these initiatives and we are truly grateful that Prostate Cancer Canada recognizes the importance of this support by investing back and strengthening the communities that give so generously to this cause.”

The Campaign for Prostate Health has already made significant changes in Edmonton. Funds raised in the first phase of the $30 million campaign supported the purchase of two, state-of-the-art robotic surgery systems at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital. The final phase of the Campaign will complete the development of the world-class, rapid access Prostate Health Clinic, offering specialized diagnostic and treatment services to men from western and northern Canada affected by prostate conditions and will support coordinated, province-wide research initiatives through the Cross Cancer Institute.

“This gift ensures that we will continue to improve the quality of care and the odds for men with prostate cancer and disease,” says Kipnes. “We look forward to a continued...
