Lightweighting initiative helps micro brewers compete on a national stage

The UK’s smallest independent and microbrewers will be able to benefit from the advantages of lightweight glass beer bottles thanks to an initiative from bottle merchant, Chapman’s.

The introduction of a third shape into Chapman’s lightweight half litre beer bottles creates a level playing field for smaller brewers who can compete without compromising their brand appearance or incurring change part costs.

The new design replicates the shape and proportions of a popular 400g bottle which has recently been withdrawn by its maker. Chapman’s worked with the design and technical experts at glassmaking partner O-I to create a replacement which weighs just 330g – a saving of 17.5% on the original weight.

This bottle, available exclusively from Chapman’s, augments the company’s two existing ‘best in class’ designs at 300g.

James Reekes, sales manager at Chapman’s, says, “The latest addition is slightly heavier, but this is dictated by the shape. What we have done with O-I is to ensure that the dimensions of our competitor’s 400g bottle, which was a great favourite with brewers, have been retained at the lowest practical weight. We are trying to encourage an entire industry to move to more sustainable packaging without compromising their brand image or customer appeal. For that reason, we need a range of lightweight containers at different weights.”

Chapman’s had prior commitment from several brewers, including Rhymney Brewery, Inveralmond, Little Valley Brewery and Glastonbury Ales, whose products will launch straight into the new design.

Paul McLavin, sales manager for O-I, says, “Lightweight manufacturing is moving steadily forward. We have an enormous number of independent brewers in the UK; moves such as this venture between ourselves and Chapman’s allow them to compete financially with the regional players. This helps their volumes and keeps the whole sector in a state of growth.”
